When Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates arrived home on July 23, he was probably looking forward to relaxing after a long trip, settling down perhaps for a nice meal, or a soothing cup of tea. What he most certainly did not expect was to have the Cambridge police come into his home, ask him for identification, and ultimately arrest him when he followed the officer outside who refused to give Gates his badge number.

What he most certainly did not expect was to have the Cambridge police come into his home, ask him for identification, and ultimately arrest him when he followed the officer outside who refused to give Gates his badge number.

Now, there are a lot of conflicting reports about what was said, where it was said and whether Gates’ and the officer’s actions were appropriate given the circumstances – even President Obama weighed in on the situation. Regardless of where you stand, whether you believe the police were justified in their actions or whether you think that Gates was “belligerent,” whether racial profiling was at play or not, what remains true is the fact that Gates was arrested on his own front porch—at his home—the place where he is supposed to be most safe—his place of refuge.

When I heard this story, I couldn’t help but think: if we aren’t safe at home, where are we safe? If we can’t trust the police to believe us, who will protect us when we are in peril? Where, then, really is the home?

If I were really honest about how this chain of events made me feel, I would admit that if left me feeling a little scared. Scared for my husband, my son and my daughter; scared for your sons and daughters, scared that even though a person has identification they may not be safe even in their own house. I realize that I have the expectation that a person should be safe at home. If this could happen to a Harvard University professor, aren’t we all vulnerable? Aren’t we all at risk?
