After sending our daughters off to kindergarten, second and fourth grades, I skimmed through a magazine and saw this quote in an article about children and race: “Researchers have found that the more diverse the environment, the more kids self-segregate by race and ethnicity.”

When Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates arrived home on July 23, he was probably looking forward to relaxing after a long trip, settling down perhaps for a nice meal, or a soothing cup of tea. What he most certainly did not expect was to have the Cambridge police come into his home, ask him for identification, and ultimately arrest him when he followed the officer outside who refused to give Gates his badge number.
